As part of the Vikos-Aoos Geopark's cooperation with other similar areas in Greece and abroad, a working visit of representatives from the Vikos-Aoos Geopark took place from 11-14 June 2019 to the Sauerland-Rothaarsteig Nature Park in Westphalia, Germany. The purpose of the visit was to explore cooperation opportunities between the two bodies with the aim of more effective management of the areas for the benefit of the region and local communities.
The mission members visited the Nature Park Information Centres in Saalhausen, Oberhundem, Medebach, and Hilchenbach (Ginsburg), the Klimawelten Environmental Education Centre in Hilchenbach, the trout aquaculture facility in Lennestadt-Gleierbrück, the Center Parcs Sauerland holiday village and the Aventura organised adventure playground in Medebach, the hiking and cycling trails in relation to their visitor counting methods, the local Rewe supermarket chain in relation to the promotion of local products, as well as the reintroduction station for the endangered rare European bison in Bad Berleburg.
The members of the delegation were welcomed by the Director and Deputy Director of the Sauerland-Rothaarsteig Nature Park, as well as the Mayors of the Municipalities of Oberhundem, Hilchenbach, Bad Berleburg and Medebach, the first three of whom are also members of the Nature Park's Board of Directors. The purpose of the working visit was to promote further cooperation between the Geopark and the Nature Park, particularly in the areas of sustainable tourism, environmental education and the promotion of local products.
It was decided for the current period to promote collaborations in the Erasmus and CLLD LEADER programmes and to further investigate the possibilities of promoting local products from the wider Geopark area (Epirus Region) to the wider Sauerland-Rothaarsteig Nature Park area. The mission was attended by the President and Director of IPEIROS SA, as well as the person responsible for Geopark issues from IPEIROS SA.
This particular work visit follows a previous one that took place last year around the same time, but this time by representatives of the Sauerland-Rothaarsteig Nature Park to the Vikos-Aoos Geopark. The work visit was implemented with the organisation and support of the Hellenic-German Assembly.
