The Vikos–Aoös Geopark is part of one of the most important protected ecosystems in Greece.
The Geopark area is subject to an extensive environmental protection regime, at both national and European levels. A large part of it belongs to the Natura 2000 network, while almost its entire extent is located within the Northern Pindos National Park.
This protection ensures the preservation of unique ecosystems, rare species and impressive natural landscapes.
Natura 2000 areas
Four core areas of the wider geographical unit of the Geopark have been included in the European Natura 2000 network, while part of a fifth area also falls within its boundaries. These areas include:

North Pindus National Park
Almost the entire Vikos–Aoös Geopark is located within the Pindus National Park, the largest terrestrial protected area in Greece, with a total area of approximately 2,000 km².
The Park was established in 2005, following the unification of two historic National Parks: Vikos-Aoos and Pindos (Valia Calda). The creation of the single Park strengthened the protection framework and the coordinated management of the area.
With its integration into the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organisation of the Management Body of the Northern Pindos National Park, the Northern Pindos National Park Management Unit operates from the base in Aspangeloi, Zagori.
The M.D. falls under the Protected Areas Management Directorate (Sector A) of the General Directorate of HFC.
