EUROPEAN GEOPARKS WEEK 2021 – POPULAR GEOLOGY SEMINARS

The first of the planned field seminars at the Vikos-Aoos Geopark, themed «Ophiolites and the peculiar geology of Smolikas,» successfully concluded, as part of EUROPEAN GEOPARKS WEEK 2021. The peculiar geology of Smolikas was presented by Mr. Evangelos Nikolaou, PhD Geologist, Head of the Hellenic Geological and Mineral Research Organisation, Epirus Regional Unit, while the connection between geodiversity and biodiversity was elaborated by Mr. H. Papaioannou, PhD Biologist (Epirus Development SA - Vikos-Aoos Geopark).

The 15 participants had the opportunity to learn about the geodiversity of Smolikas along the Paliosellio Refuge-Smolikas Drakolimni route and to be informed about all the processes that took place inside and on the surface of the earth which led to the formation of the second highest mountain in our country, as we see it today. At the same time, questions were discussed regarding the endemic flora, the giant Bosnian pines and the correlation of geomorphology with rare species of wild fauna, such as the unique Pindus chamois.

The next popular science field seminar as part of European Geoparks Week 2021 will take place in the Vikos Gorge on Tuesday 29/06/2021. The topic to be developed is titled: «The unique geology and geomorphology of the Vikos Gorge.

The field seminars are aimed at individuals who are employed or interested in pursuing careers related to geo-tourism (mountain guides, eco-tour guides, etc.), as well as citizens who are interested in enriching their knowledge about the rich geo-diversity of the Geopark and the wider area.

The event is organised by Development Agency of Epirus SA, as the managing body of the Vikos-Aoos Geopark, and the development of the geological themes is handled by expert geologists from the Institute of Geology and Subsurface Research, Regional Unit of Epirus.
