As part of the celebration of 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development and Geoparks Week, the Municipality of Konitsa and the UNESCO Global Geopark of Vikos-Aoos are organising a Popular Geology Seminar, on Wednesday 14 June 2017, with co-organisers the I.G.M.E. and Epirus S.A. on behalf of the Vikos-Aoos Geopark Management Committee (Committee for the Preservation and Promotion of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Vikos-Aoos).
The one-day seminar includes two parts:
- In the morning, presentations on the geological interpretation of the environment will be held in the Konitsa Town Hall.,
- While in the afternoon a crossing of the Aoos Gorge will take place from the Konitsa Bridge to the Stomio Monastery, where the important geotopes of the route will be pointed out on site.
The scientific managers of the Seminar are the experienced geologists from I.G.M.E., Panagiotis Paschos and Evangelos Nikolaou (scientific associates) of the Vikos-Aoos Global Geopark.
The seminar is primarily aimed at eco-guides, mountain guides, and those involved in the tourism sector in general.
