It represents the main outflow of the Tymfi karst system. The operating mechanism is complex and its appearance is a function of the aquifer's intersection by the Voidomatis River. Faults belonging to the Astraka fault zone pass through the location where the spring emerges. The impermeable bedrock of the karst aquifer consists of low-permeability dolomites.
From the time series of data collected by the IGME (Institute of Geological and Mineral Exploration) a mean discharge of 1.53 m³/sec for the spring is indicated. The average water temperature is 90°C with no significant seasonal variations.
