POPULAR GEOLOGY SEMINARS – EUROPEAN GEOPARKS WEEK, 18 June 2021
As part of EUROPEAN GEOPARKS WEEK, the Vikos-Aoos Geopark is organising field-based popular geology seminars from 23 to 30 June 2021, with the aim of highlighting the unique geological features of the area.
Within this framework, two hiking excursions – field seminars in nature will take place, specifically:
a. On Wednesday 23/6/2021, at Smolikas on the topic: «Ophiolites and the distinctive geology of Smolikas» and
b. On Tuesday 29/06/2021, at the Vikos Gorge on the theme: «The unique geology and geomorphology of the Vikos Gorge.
The field seminars are aimed at individuals who are employed or interested in pursuing careers related to geo-tourism (mountain guides, eco-tour guides, etc.), as well as citizens who are interested in enriching their knowledge about the rich geo-diversity of the Geopark and the wider area.
The event is organised by the Development Agency of Epirus SA, as the managing body of the Vikos-Aoos Geopark, and the development of the geological themes is handled by specialist geologists from the Institute of Geology and Subsurface Research (ΕΑΓΜΕ), Epirus Branch.
Participation in the seminar is at the participants' own risk, and they must arrange their own transport to and from the designated meeting point. Basic hiking knowledge and equipment, as well as good physical condition, are essential prerequisites. All necessary measures regarding the covid-19 pandemic will be taken. A self-test the day before is compulsory.
For the first seminar, the meeting point is set at the «Stone Refuge of Smolikas» in Paliosele (altitude 1680m) and the seminar will take place along the route «Stone refuge of Paliosele- Drakolimni Smolikas". Meeting time at the entrance of the refuge is 9:00 am. For the second seminar, there will be an announcement at a later date.
