\nAn educational visit \u2013 a seminar \u2013 took place at the Vikos-Aoos Geopark.
\nstudents of the University of Ioannina as part of the organisation of events
\nmeeting of members of the broader local community (Universities, associations
\netc.) with the Geopark. The students who participated had the opportunity within a
\nthe whole day to be initiated into the secrets of the Geopark simultaneously on topics that
\nrelate to geo-diversity and bio-diversity. <\/p>\n

Specialist geologists from
\nThe Geopark presented the students with the peculiarities of geomorphology, the
\nhydrogeology and geology of the western part of the Geopark from the point
\nfrom the confluence of the Aoos and Voidomatis rivers onto the Konitsa plain to the straits
\nand the Sarandaporos river valley with its tributaries, as well as the unique geological phenomenon of
\nAmaranth's heat-resistant\".[1].<\/p>\n

Likewise, biologists and
\nenvironmentalists, professors from the University of Ioannina, presented to
\nstudents the unique ecosystems of this whole area and in particular the
\nvegetation units and the rare flora and fauna from the invertebrates to the
\nlarge mammals. During this educational visit-seminar
\nThe students had the opportunity to walk on dirt roads and authentically
\nancient paths and to delve into the peculiarities of mountain rivers,
\nof oak and black pine forests as well as mountainous
\nof lakes and their particular fauna. <\/p>\n

In parallel, they were informed about the
\nefforts being made at local level for the development of alternative
\ntourism and especially hiking tourism, after having walked also a
\nsmall section of the main \u00abEpirus Trail\u00bb of the Epirus Region. Furthermore, in the little free
\ntime that they had, those who managed it, got a taste of the relaxing and
\nTherapeutic properties of Amaranth Steam Baths.<\/p>\n

On the educational trip-seminar
\n45 students from the University of Ioannina participated from six different
\nDepartments\/Faculties (Biological Applications and Technologies, Pedagogical, Medicine,
\n(Chemical, Physical, Mathematical). <\/p>\n

The thematic units of
\nseminar, developed by the professors of the P.I. Ms. Vasiliki Katis (Department of Biological
\nApplications and Technologies - Biodiversity Laboratory), Mr Konstantinos
\nGavrilakis (Department of Primary Education - Laboratory of Geography
\n& Environmental Education), the Head of the Hellenic Geological
\nand Mining Research, Mr Evangelos Nikolaou, Dr. Hydrogeologist, and
\nHead of the Vikos-Aoos Geopark Structure \/ IP EICROS AE Mr. Charitakis
\nPapaioannou Dr. Biologist.<\/p>\n

The educational visit
\nseminar organised by IPIROS SA, as the managing body of the Geopark
\nVikos-Aoos, with the participation of the University of Ioannina (Department of Biological
\nApplications & Technologies), of the Hellenic Geological and Mining Authority
\nResearch (EAGME) and with the support of the Region of Epirus.<\/p>\n

It is noted that this is the first event of its kind, which forms part of the implementation of the Geopark's strategy \u2013 as part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks \u2013 to foster understanding of its unique characteristics and values among the members of the wider local community.<\/p>\n
