A landform of rapid vertical erosion on the northern side of Tymfi. The large watershed of the Aoos, which develops to the east in the Valia Kalda (warm valley) and Metsovo region over flysch and ophiolitic rocks, converges into the narrow gorge formed in the limestones of Tymfi. Following a 10-kilometre route between Trapezitsa and Gamila, it spreads out onto the plain of Konitsa and then, along with the Voidomatis, flows into the Ionian Sea via Albania. The Aoos is the only Greek river that exits the country. The route of the Aoos gorge was determined by the geometry of the limestone strata and the orientation of the faults. Large normal faults with a NW-SE direction coincide with the direction of the gorge.
